Message from Richard:

"Smaller this year - I chose an obscure and not very popular battle and period! Next year though - I think it will be the Hydaspes, Alexander and his Makedonians v Porus and his Indians, so plenty of time and scope to get the armies together... Richard"

So cracking news there if it is confirmed. Better start painting Indian chariots Les.

For a 5 year old, that would be quite funny. Anytime you'd like to join in with contributing figures, feel free.

From Richard:

…he was informed that Porus, with the whole of his army, was on the other side of that river…

The twelfth annual Society of Ancients Battle Day, Saturday 28 March 2015 Sycamore Hall, Drayton Road, Bletchley, Near Milton Keynes, MK2 3RR The Hydaspes 326 BC

Upon this, the drivers of the elephants urged forward the beasts against the cavalry but now the phalanx itself of the Macedonians was advancing against the elephants, the men casting darts at the riders and also striking the beasts themselves, standing round them on all sides. The action was unlike any of the previous contests; for wherever the beasts could wheel round, they rushed forth against the ranks of infantry and demolished the phalanx of the Macedonians, dense as it was.

Macedonians meet elephants in battle for the first time, from Arrian’s Anabasis, found online at http://websfor.org/alexander/arrian/book5b.asp http://websfor.org/alexander/arrian/book5b.asp

For our twelfth annual Battle Day, we once again invite you to a unique day’s wargaming.

The battle: The Hydaspes 326 BC – the invading force of Alexander the Great and his all-conquering but war-weary Macedonians are met on the banks of the River Hydaspes by the Indian army of King Porus.

So sharpen your sarissas and xystons and prepare to fight one last battle for glory with Alexander, or fight to repel the invaders atop elephants and chariots with the brave King Porus.

Cool.  The info I have is Porus had 30,000 Infantry, 4,000 cavalry, 300 Chariots & 100 Elephants. Alexander had 23,000 Infantry & 8,000 Cavalry.

Now the Macedonians aren't a problem, we've easily got figures for them, the Indians on the other hand....

I have 12 Infantry units, 2 Cavalry units, 12 Elephants & 8 Chariots.

So we need more of everything except Elephants !

Best get painting Jim ! :)

At least we are 90% there this time rather than 0% as last year.

Does the 12 ellies include my 4? I shall be getting an allied force for my Bactrians (I was thinking 4 units of foot at least). Based on the Piquet unit numbers (high end), we need:

3 elephant units

2 chariot units

11 cavalry units

43 infantry units.

We usually double up the representation which gives us 2, 1, 6, & 24.

At the same rates we have for Alexander:

16 infantry, 12 cavalry (as you say we have that covered between us.)

The question remains if Nick and Jim want to get involved with figures, terrain etc. (We can use THE River!!!)

The Ellies are what I got last year, you have the crews, 8 Essex to be painted and 4 Curteys/1st Corps painted by A&M.  I've another couple of Essex Indian units about somewhere to be painted that I got a couple of years ago.  Knew that river was a good investment ! :)  We will still need about 6 more Infantry and 4 Cavalry after that. They're not that difficult to paint and both Essex and 1st Corps are really nice figures, Newline (from SHQ) are pretty good as well, so the choice of figure isn't a problem.
