I love these Roman shields:

I know of no evidence for them though(?)

A good impression of how colorful the 4th-5th C. Roman army should be:

My 15mm's are !

From memory there isn't a lot of evidence of shield designs until the Notitia Dignitatum, even the Republic hasn't got a lot, certainly not of uniform unit designs.

There are quite a lot of designs known throughout the Imperial period but colours are a bit of a mystery. Monumental and gravestone carvings have lost their paint and mosaics / frescoes are not handily labelled as to what unit is being shown. Still a lot of argument as to whether the monuments such as Trajans Column show shield designs representing each of the units on the campaigns or just show that there were multiple designs within a legion. There is some suggestion that each cohort was differentiated in some way by their shields... A Notitia equivalent for the entire Republic and Imperial periods would be amazing! (I might just make one up!)
