Unfeasibly Miniatures: Empire in Peril range not yet available... best obtained from Black Hat Miniatures. Will have British and German infantry, cavalry and artillery Ironclad Miniatures, have Britsh infantry, gun crew and Naval gun crew with Nordenfeld. Their "Prussians" are fewer, just infantry (inc. Jaeger) and tank crew(!) Irregular Miniatures have only British in their Home Service uniform range but do include Guards, Highlanders and cavalry as well as machine guns. In their Really Useful Guns range they have quite a few different artillery pieces and generic crews. The infantry are either marching or at attention. The also have sailors also marching. Honourable Lead Boiler Suit Company HLBSC have some very nice boats and naval + coastal guns. Sadly the Home Service uniform figures appear to be out of production. Redoubt Miniatures have Home Service pattern uniform British including infantry and artillery crew. They also do Russians as an alternative opponent

HOW did I not spot this?!! The Perry Zulu Wars British plastic set includes Home Service helmets. As many cheap and easily convertible British as we will ever need! Glad I have only bought a couple of dozen metal Brits now...

Meridian Miniatures have some very Steampunk orientated British and Prussians: Heads with pickehaube might be useful though...

These are from a 'German Revolution' range, not sure what that is but they look to me like they would fit as armed civilians.

I have those slated for "Bavarian Volunteers" - basically German Nationalist paramilitary types. They costumes are "traditional" so will fit okay and the weapons are close enough. Won't be able t use the light machine guns and the heavy MG should be on a more artillery style carriage. I don't want too many automatic weapons anyway as I think it will be quite a challenge with just the repeating rifles...

Nice and a damn site cheaper than the Empress versions: (But they are cracking little sculpts...)

Saw those earlier. The Brits for the Zulu Wars were there first range, not sure if they part of that or later add ons. All the Empress stuff are lovely sculpts, got some of there ECW Cavalry and they are beautiful. All are scarily pricey though. Might be worth it for 'specials' though. Was thinking of some of the command figures and Boers.

If we used these as the Heligoland Militia, it would give them a distinct flavoiur.

They would be perfect! (Colonial horse of some kind?) With the very obvious spike maybe even collaborator militia...? (Although both sides could really have "Collaborators" I suppose...) Ah found them Natal Carabiniers, they look superb in that darb blue but the beauty of this is we can do then in any colours we fancy. I can see the 1st Troop Heligoland Yoemanry being born the next time Empress have a sale! (I probably would already have bought a bunch of these, but luckily their site soesnt work properly on the Ipad)

These probably could be used as hastily raised locals or civilians/rabble. From AW Miniatures.

Yup! I have some Newline Boers for just that use:
Also I like the look of the Perry armed civilians for Mafeking:

There are many suppliers of Boers, some better than others, that can be used.

I’m not sure the wide brimmed hat is very typical of European use for the period but military forces raised with an inspiration from or sympathies with South African or American methods would have reasons to imitate them.
