Nick asked: "at one time there was a proposal to buy figures for this period - is this still a live project? i was going to get naval brigade & some dervishes - how many of each should i buy? what are the rest of you planning to get? do we have a se of rules in mind? i presume not suitable for piquet, probably semi-skirmish"

In answer to Nick's question I have a dozen or so redcoats painted up and ready to go (Black Tree?), I will cite the Egyptian campaign (Tel el Kebir) if anyone moans about the presence of red uniforms.I also have the first few of the Sikh contingent (you met them masquerading as Frontier Scouts on Sunday) and the 16 cavalry who are Sudanese but are often to be seen pretending to be Maharattas or Saracen Arabs. I willl certainly be buying some of the Perry Mahdists, probably basing them up a la Peter Gilder on big multi-figure bases 5 - 8 figures on a 60x60(?) base. Maybe even deeper...

A successful visit to Cavalier today (once we got there!) Picked up 2 boxes of the Perry Mahdists and a set of rules for the Sudan as well as a very nice Egyptian officer figure from Gringo 40s Supposed to be for the Egyptian contingent in Mexico but he will very nicely as the leader of my ill-fated Egyptians in the Sudan! Also got a British office with binos from Ironclad Miniatures and one of their funky steam powered tanks (not for the Sudan though.)

To answer all of Nick's questions, Piquet will actually work in this period but you will need to find the Din of Battle supplement. I believe that the Second Edition is noww available. At least, I have acquired my copy. As to the number of soldiers that you should buy, I would start at 1,000 for the british and work up from there for the Mahdists. As the Anglos had around 25,000 men at Omburman and the Mahdist army 50,000 you would only need to collect 2,000 figures for them. Just to clarify, that should be 3,000 figures each, or, in Jim's case, three figures.

3 soldiers?! I fear you overestimate Jims command capabilities!

I was actually referring to his ability to finance and then paint an army!
