I am looking at the ww2 rules & they specify troops as being mounted on bases - eg inf gtoup is an element of 4 figures on a base. I propose we standardise on 30mm square bases for infantry. Who concurs? If not, what would you choose?

Is the next game at Jims? When?

20mm x 15mm seems very small. I know the figures are tiny but they need to be spread out to look right. Fitting 4 figures on the smaller base will make it look crowded.

I think ovals would look good as we are not in an age of regimented lines (maybe with the exception of the Poles :)) How about 20 x 30?

I hoped to keep my troops available for more than one set of rules & some rules require square or rectangular bases. I agree that oval bases look better but they seem less adaptable.

Okay. Not that fussed. I will probably avoid doing much in the way of basing anyway as I am using figures that come cast onto bases.

For what it's worth (not a lot normally) most sets of rules only specify base sizes to fit in with artillery beaten zones - battery of guns covers 120mm * 80mm therefore infantry bases should be X * Y- otherwise people would put there infantry on 120 * 80 bases so only one would be in the zone.  Infantry didn't 'dress lines' or similar so the base size doesn't actually depict the space covered by the troops, it is the designers attempt to depict an area that could be covered, as long as they were in contact (verbally, visually etc) and sometimes without they could be any distance apart, all the WW2 rules are compromises with regard to base sizes as they weren't especially regimented and although the fireteams tried to stay close they weren't that worried as long as they knew where the others were. Urban fighting for instance, they didn't go round in clumps of 4 as depicted, but used a bit of common and covered each other as required.  I prefer ovals and 20 * 15 is quite large for 4 figures (approx 20 feet by 15 in figure scale, so about as big as my houses total floor plan).  Most current rules try to base up sections (8-12 men) rather than WRG's fireteams or use the fire team type size to depict sections or platoons so it will be tough to base exactly for more than one set of rules.  If it's just us surely we can base as we like and say that this oval is the same as that square as long as it's close (20*15 vs 20*20 for example).  Still might be an idea to decide on a set of rules and stick to that's basing convention as far as possible.  I'll look at the sets that I've got and let you know, I would imagine they will be quite close in size, if not, we've got a decision to make.
