I already have a ticket. I am quite drawn to the rail option too as I can then have a post Salute drink with the other Frothers (I am taking part in the Frothers UK WW1 fantasy game.)

I have the same reservations about plastics as you do Nick. For Sudan and Zulu games however they do allow sizable native forces to be fielded without a second mortgage being required and more importantly allows the likes of me to dabble in a period that isn't a main interest ( I only have about 7 of those!)

Perry Miniatures I hold as a seperate class as their plastic are almost as good as their metals and certainly better than many other firm's metal figures. In addition they are at the proportional end of the scale so work quite well with my slim Alban/ Eagle Napoleonics. At the other end of the scale Wargame Factory are mostly dross but the ECW ones we bought are from Warlord, and they do release a decent number of metal figures as welkl as plastics, so are worth supporting. (Whose idea was ECW in the first place!?)

My other reason to support plastic figures is as a starter option for new gamers. Not just the price advantage but the packaging style attracts younger consumers (Although I cannot see what is wrong with bare metal in a ziplock bag myself :))

Les: The answer to your question is that otherwise your Heliograph team will never know the thrill of defending their post to the last man against a tidal wave of Ansar fanatics!

My current plans are to prebuy a ticket, travel by train & be there for a prompt 10:00 startI have mixed feelings about the plastic Perry figures. I like the price but it is not really important to me - it does mean others who are price sensitive can get in to the period easily. I have been unimpressed by the plastic wargames factory figures - you can make a variety of poses but I found them fiddly to assemble. I am assured that Perry are better & the figures that I have seen look very fine - until you pick them up when they feel "wrong". Might buy some plastics to try, as well as some war of the Roses cavalry. People talk about giving plastics weight with metal bases but I don`t think I have seen this done convincingly so far.I have got a number of metal Perry Sudan figures to paint up this summer.

That only reinforces my question :)

As per you, I only dabble in these periods - the Brits are really for VSF - so major outlay is not a priority.  The Perry plastics are lovely, but I have only one lifetime and so Napoleonics, gorgeous as they are, are quite low on my list of things to do.  As my interest has been diverted to VBCW and Aeronef in the short term, the likelyhood of me buying anything in a 'new' period is quite slim.  Although I might get some of those lovely buildings if they are there at Salute and a few VBCW figures maybe.

Shopping List:

(Easy a place to keep it as anywhere. What's yours?)

Turkishy cavalry for use with Baker's Gendarmery in the Sudan. (Oh yeah I'm going for some quality troops! Already have some Darkest Africa Askaris in kepis who will do for ragged Sudanese soldiery.)

Eureka - some nice Napoleonic vignettes & other bits

Perry - medieval cottage, mounted men-at-arms(? don't really need these...) wattle fencing (not sure if this was Perry/Renedra)

Capitan - early Spanish Naps (if they're there._

GW - new washes which are supposed to be very good.

I would happily meet beforhand but want to be at Salute when it opens as I have a pathological fear that if I am late all the goods will have sold out & there will be nothing to spend my money on. An alternative would be to meet  at a set time & place inside Excel.

I will probably get a train from Shenfield at 9.00ish, on the assumption that I have stuff for the games I am participating in. By the sound of it Nick will already be queuing at Excel by then :D I have no idea what other train lines do, Les is yer man for that.

Jim, if you are going, get a train from Basildon to West Ham and change for DLR to Custom House.  If you let me know a time I can meet you at Upminster, I come up from Lakeside so can change there.  The time table is on C2C website -

http://www.c2c-online.co.uk/travel_information/current_timetable

Look at the Shoeburyness to Fenchurch Street bit.

I'm off on Holiday tomorrow so don't know I can reply.

P.S  do you need anything from H&R ?  I'm going to order some stuff.

les, hope scotland holiday is fun.

yes i'm putting together a rather large H&R order and what time do you propose to meet up at upminster? the show starts at ten i cant pre book a ticket for the lack of bank account stuff. so i'll have to que which is a pain but thats the way it is so hey i'll have to do it the old fashioned way and get to the back of said que (so ideally i want to be outside at about 9.30)

im hoping to get the rest of my ww2 figures at salute and finish off at selwg ( the bulk will be from salute though...i worked out i want another 110 panzer 4's alone (£44.00)

the aim is for a full 1 to 1 division of infantry ( prolly gonna stick with adler here since they seem to offer very good value for money AND quality) and a brigade of armour plus support units :) we're almost at the point of getting the spray cans out and doing some painting.

i've come a bit unstuck though as i love the motorbikes i got at cavalier and really they are early war (something i may get my feet wet with next year  :) lol)

on a similar note is anyone going to get any ussr 6mm figs

Hi I'm back !

The 9.00 at West Ham get to Upminster at 8.46, I can get there for 8.39, so if that what you want to do, let me know which carriage you're in, I would suggest the first as the exit at West Ham is that end.

Holiday was grand, lots of bumps to see and wibbly-wobbly roads or was that just the Scotch ?  Weather similar to here but the big bumps had white hats on still. Does anyone like Rennie Mackintosh ? Saw one of his houses, brilliant design features and style.

No, it's not, though the friends I stayed with have a distillery about 5 mins away, very nice it was to. I think anyway, bit blurred........

well les, you never got back to me about your H&R order, so i've e-mailed andy kirk my list and will be that much poorer.

the good news is, should he be able to fill my order completely, i'll have 'most' of what i need/want except maybe i'll need to grab more inf from adler at some later date.
