Following Nick's idea about using stands with 2D cards to represent the units for Montaperti, I had a go at making something similar.

This is a cavalry base for the Siennese side (thus the shield). Here is a rough idea for the back:

This is scaled at 15mm Piquet base sizes, so this is 80mm wide and would represent 2 cavalry elements (2 of these needed for a PK unit). The back could have the full roster info on it and a smaller picture or none. I like the way that the opponent will only know roughly what troop type they are facing from the base but not the specifics. They could be Famiglia knights, lower quality Condotta or wild and crazy heavy German knights.

Whattya think?

Yeah I have some of those stands (The same ones Nick didn't bring to the Qadesh game ;)) but I could just imagine the amount of time we were going to spend standing them back up if we were playing with lots of them on the table. This design if nothing  else is a lot more stable.

Looks different and usable. I've got potfuls of 'normal' sized 15mm bases - remember the Romans ! I take it the graphics are printed and then stuck down ? If thats the case, it could be used for lots of other periods/games at minimal cost and time.  Only issue I have is will it be acceptable to the pedants at Battle day ? we could try and temper this with spending most of our time doing the battlefield and have excellent terrain custom made for the battle.

Like the idea of the stats on the reverse by the way.

Freezywater do Italian medieval city states flags.  Haven't seen an image yet, but either they or L&L will be at SELWG or one of the other shows between now and April.

The booklets I lent to Nick have all the heraldic shields of the contingents and senior knights which could be easily scanned and printed onto cards or flags. Good idea about using 15mm bases as a quicker and neater looking base. Only advantage to foamcard is that it is easily cut to make slots for upstanding part.

I am well up for making nice terrain btw. Key will be being able to find accurate maps but with Google Earth and the like shouldn't be too difficult (famous last words?)

Here's a mockup of the bases with the card stands and printed card unit IDs.

If you lot are happy with the concept I will provide these for both armies.

Looks cool ! Will the upright be paper or thin card ? Do you need the bases mentioned earlier - 40mm wide, various depths 15, 20 & 30mm as per DBM/WRG.

The upright will be card (like our PK decks) I used paper for the mockup just to see the proportions. The bases are double frontage (80mm, 40mm deep for cavalry) so that we need 2 per unit. I am still tending towards using the foamboard rather than hardboard/mdf for the additional "chunkiness".
