League of Augsburg Derby 2012 https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/ League of Augsburg Derby 2012 First Game - Mackay's Brigade Four seperate games were run on the different sections of the table on the Saturday morning Here you can see my first command marching along the road with their English colleagues already deployed in the glen beyond. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167669605 167669605 First Game - The Glen The scenario was clearing an Irish glen with a band of (nominally Jacobite) Rapparees esconsed in a ruined castle. A force of newly arrived Scots Highlanders had also arrived to "negotiate with the bandits. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167679986 167679986 First Game - Lauder's Regiment One of Mackay's Brigade. These troops had been on the wrong end of a Highlander charge at Killiekrankie so were at morale disadvantages if they faced them again. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167674194 167674194 First Game - The English Brigade These started formed up in the glen with the Highlanders poised in the hills above... https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167674193 167674193 First Game - Mackay's quickly formed line and headed up in support of the English. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167674195 167674195 First Game - The Battlefield The Williamite cavalry on the left of the marsh face off against Jacobite dragoons. To the right of the marshy ground the formed up Williamite line readies itself to receive the Jacobite charge. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167674201 167674201 First Game - Jacobite Attack The Jacobites advance on the Williamite line with several regiments of dragoons in support. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167674199 167674199 First Game - Dragoons Yet more dragoons that had seemed a safe distance away were now spotted advancing on the rear of the Williamite army. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167674197 167674197 First Game - Highland Charge The Jacobites flung their irregular mobs of blade weilding Highlanders at the Williamite line. The regular soldiers would have one chance to blast them with musketry and cannon fire before they were among them. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167674198 167674198 First Game - Disaster! The Willaimites were not able to unleash their volleys due to a lack of powder (several event cards were played, there was no time to bring up the powder cart) The Highlanders tore into their ranks and sent them fleeing after a brief fight. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167674202 167674202 First Game Only the Williamite artillery stood to their guns even sending the Jacobite dragoons packing with well-aimed fire from their light cannons. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=167674192 167674192 Main Game - Denmark vs. France On the far left wing of the Williamite army two Danish brigades with supporting English cavalry were tasked with tackling the French element of the Jacobite army esconsed in a large village. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937222 168937222 Main Game - the plan The senior Danish brigade under the Duke of Wurtemburg was to tackle a formidable revetted earthwork covering one side of the village. With no advantage of infantry numbers, conventional wisdom would be that an attack on a defended settlement was bound to fail. The dogged professionalism of the Danes would have to overcome convention... https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937223 168937223 Main Game - the assault Gun batteries were deployed to soften up the French position but still the leading Danish regiment (Funen) took heavy casualties approaching close enough to assault earthworks. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937224 168937224 Main Game - the break-in(!) The view from behind the strongly held French line. At the height of the engagement the raw French defenders decided that there was an opportunity to loot the nearby houses of the village and evacuated the position allowing the remnants of Funen's to take possesion of the main redoubt. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937226 168937226 Main Game - a measured advance The Danish brigade before the town although only a demonstration had to advance purposefully into the sharpshooting cannons and crippling volleys to convince the defenders of their intent. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937225 168937225 Main Game Only one regiiment of von Tettau's brigade could be held in reserve in case of the arrival of roving Jacobite cavalry. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937227 168937227 Main Game - struggle for the redoubt Whilst the decimated Funen Regiment fought to maintain the hold on the earthwork against desperate French counter-attacks the rest of the Danish move up in support. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937228 168937228 Main Game - trial by musket fire The second Danish brigade held their position in front of the dug in French taking huge casualties from the more numerous defenders. Their commander stood tall under the enemy cannonfire for three turns to inspire the troops! https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937229 168937229 Main Game - in the nick of time. Funen's Regiment pay a terrible price for their dogged stand but it allows their supports to take over the redoubt just before the French can reclaim it. On the right the Danish Garde are thrown into the fray with decisive results - French regiments in their path are reduced to bloody ruin! https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937230 168937230 Main Game - Victory! The French are bludgeoned out of their position and the way is now open for the unused cavalry to exploit the hole in the enemy lines. Alas events on the remainder of the battlefield mean that it is too late. The sacrifices of the noble Danes have not won the day for their paymasters but they can retire from the field with colours proudly flying and the undoubted respect of their opponents. https://wargamewarrior.webs.com/apps/photos/photo?photoID=168937231 168937231
